About the School Council

School Councils provide a way for parents and the community to consult with and offer advice to principals to enhance student learning. School councils are legislated under the Education Act and are mandatory for all schools in the public education system. The School Council Regulation, under the Education Act provides more detailed guidance on establishing and hosting a School Council. Here are a few highlights.

Duties or Actions for School Councils

School councils serve as a bridge between the school and the community. Their duties include advising the principal and school board on educational matters, supporting school programs, and promoting the well-being and learning of students.

Councils often provide feedback on policies, help plan school activities, and act as a voice for parents and the community.

Membership

Membership typically includes:

Parents or guardians of student enrolled in the school
the Principal of the school
a Teacher from the school
may include persons who have an interest in the school.

Parents must make up most of the council to ensure the parent voice is central to decision-making.

Reports and Support by Principals

Principals are required to support the council by providing necessary information, updates, and reports about school operations, student performance, and improvement plans.

They act as a key link between the council and the school board, ensuring the council is informed and able to provide meaningful advice.

The School Education Plan with Goals
Annual Education Results indicating results of measures and surveys
- Including PAT and Diploma results with 5 years
Counselling and Wellness Plans
Intended School Fees for the coming year

What about Funds?

A school council may receive donations on behalf of the school board, but it cannot independently raise money through activities that would require a gaming licence (e.g., raffles, bingos, casinos) under the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act. Any funds received must be handled transparently and used only to benefit students and the school community. (See Fundraising Club)
